He will be missed by the nation of Barbados, and by people throughout the Caribbean.

Undoubtedly when you see a pair of pants hanging from a galvanize pailing your first thought is what on God's earth is it doing there. Was it discarded? Was it washed and then hung out? And why would it be hung outside the galvanize pailing? I cannot answer any of those questions. But I do know it was a good subject for a photographer as I walked through the Garden Land.

The Brooklyn West Indian American Day Carnival celebrated 43 years of existence this year. So you won't find me talking about the shortening of the parade route. Or the immense feeling of restriction applied by the Police Force. If I didn't know any better I would venture to say the Forces (that be) are trying to end one of New York City's most festive parades, even though it is attended by hundreds of thousands of faithful fans.

But enough of that so let us move on. Even though I did not have my Press Pass, and was unable to shoot many of the Mas Bands due to the crazy crowds that lined the Parkway, I decided to concentrate on the people watching the parade. I will tell you one thing, as soon as the pulsating music hit me, all of my troubles seem to just disappear. What a great tonic for the mind and soul the Brooklyn West Indian American Day Carnival is.

There was a very big old two story Soft Stone house where this little park is in Tamarind Lane. An old eccentric white man use to live there. All the kids in the Lane knew him as "Happy". Apparently that grand house was demolished when Happy died.

To the far right you will find the Old Probation Office. Actually, it used to be the home of the Rector for the Moravian Church in Roebuck Street. This was in my Dad's time. The middle yellow two floor building is the Old Welfare Office. I have many stories about that place but it is not for this post. Finally, to the back in the far left you will find the famous Old Sugar Bond. Many evenings on my way home from Roebuck Primary School I would stop there and get sugar for my tamarinds. But I wasn't the only one, all the boys did it.

These wild flowers are very beautiful. There are oblivious to the economics of the time; the hunger or poverty of the world; they surely don't have a care about politics. Theses wild flowers have only one function, to look beautiful.

If you were a kid growing up in the Garden Land Barbados, then your main concern would have been hunting Doves. To do that you would need a gutterperk or wait for Carl Downey to give you a bird he shot. To compliment the dove you would need a Breadfruit, preferably roasted, and to top it off a JU-C to wash it all down. By the way I prefer a red JU-C.

This collage of images says it all. And as you could imagine it brings back loads of memories. Garden Land memories...what a time I had.

Call me crazy, but I prefer you to call me a big kid. I was walking along Dorchester and saw a broken limb on the sidewalk. Immediately, I saw that I could break a gutterperk fork from the tangle mess of broken branches. Without hesitation I did so. I took my new found gutterperk fork home and took the bark off, and then I left it to dry.

An old shoe tongue provided the leather I needed to make the holder to catapult the rock. Last but not least, the 99 Cent Store enabled me to get the power for my gutterperk, the rubber bands. Without the rubber bands the gutterperk is useless.

Now before you get to thinking I am here in Brooklyn shooting birds, it isn't so. I am working on a project and it requires some images of a gutterperk. And since I did not have one, the only option was to make one. So, there you are.

The little boy in me wants me to travel back in time to that safe place called the Garden Land and shoot a few doves. But I am too old now and I know better. That is, unless someone is prepared to pay me a million dollars to bring me out of retirement, LOL.

This stunning view reveals the architectural beautiful Anglican Church, St. Joseph Parish Church. Located at the base of Hackleton's Cliff, this church was constructed after much debate about its location in 1839. Prior to that, the church was destroyed by a powerful hurricane in 1831. The original church was built sometime before 1641.

My love for walking Barbados is extreme. So much so, the heat of the day never seems discourage me. And like any other day, my wondering feet found me on Pine Road. The old Masonic Lodge caught my eye and I crossed the road to have a closer look. Some folks were hanging around the entrance, so I asked a few questions. But I could not gain entrance to take pictures of the interior. I had to settle for shooting the exterior.

This architectural beauty of limestone and soft-stone was built sometime around 1888. The Lodge was constituted on the 15th of May, 1888. But in the facade to the front of the building is engraved with 1892. Not sure what that date is for.

As of today the Masonic Lodge (St. Michael's Lodge) has been sold. Let us hope the building is not torn down for some crazy condo project or something of the like. Maybe, just maybe, it can be restored and uses as a museum or some commercial business offices.

For those of you who accidentally landed on this blog, welcome. And for the folks that came out of your own desire, thank you for your continual support. The direction of this blog has not changed. This illustrious High School (Harrison Free School) had its humble start in Spry Street, St Michael. In 1733 the school was established by a wealthy Bridgetown merchant by the name of Thomas Harrison. The school was to serve the poor and destitute boys from the Bridgetown area. In 1780 a huge hurricane leveled a huge amount of Bridgetown including the school. The property was repaired at a huge sum but consequently fell into poor condition and was sold to the Masonic Lodge in 1781. The school reopened in 1789 on Crumpton Street, but by then it was a high class grammar school for the rich elite boys of the gentlemen class. The all boys' status ended in early 1980s when it became co-ed.

Harrison College Secondary High School (I am not certain when the school was renamed) spans over several acres and comprises of many buildings and playing fields. It is one of the most prominent sixth form secondary schools in Barbados and the Caribbean. The school is known for its high academic standards and only the brightest gain entrance after a competitive common entrance examination. The High School boasts many great former students, some of which went on and became Prime Ministers, Lawyers, Bankers, and great sports people.

This is a toast to The Independence of Barbados. But if I might add that we as a people of Barbados were mentally independent long before we broke the chains of colonialism in 1966. And we were equally free long before we were enslaved by greed. And like in those dark days there were those not of our persuasion who aided us in the quest for our physical freedom.

The same is true today, we have to as a nation, continue to better ourselves and uphold the freedoms of our brothers and sisters. Barbados is more than the sum of its parts. On that note I wish to give thanks to the place of my birth. Join me Barbadians of every denomination, no matter what part of the world you may be, in wishing Barbados a HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY.

Barbados is home to some of the loveliest mix of architecture in the Caribbean. The island boasts Victorian, Georgian, and Jacobean homes that can marvel some in the same like as those located throughout the Caribbean and for that matter the rest of the world.

This brings us to The Parliament Buildings of Barbados, a structural wonder of limestone, brick, and mahogany. The huge arches, towers, and causeways, are tribute to the democratic nation island we call Little England, the island of Barbados.

It is my mission to bring Old Barbados back to the forefront via photography. Whether it be some old chattel house, an old soft stone house, or some other dilapidated dwelling, you can still find some subtle beauty in them.

These stirring images came as I escaped in to my past. Traversing the island of Barbados, I was looking for all that was old and beautiful. It led me to childhood places and what came out was a photojournalist body of work.

Old Barbados is disappearing, making way for the new. By the time you read this book, many of these images may have already been bulldozed.

This December (2009) will be a year since the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary has been closed. The Government of Barbados has yet to give any concrete answer as to whether the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary and the surrounding 200 plus acres of swamp lands (mangroves) will be legislated as a National Swamp.

It is hard sometimes to capture raw emotion. From experience I can tell you when I feel a good soca sound I am usually in a trance. It can sometimes take you away.

I can remember as a boy taking a coconut stick, attaching a cotton noose to it, and catching lizards. That was fun then. My cousin and I used to put them in an empty paint can filled with water, just to see them squirm around. Those were the days when a little green lizard could hold your attention for hours. This is my silliest attempt to attract birds so I can capture them. But no sparrows or blackbirds are paying any attention to the Golden Apple I hung on a string. Maybe, a hummingbird would bail me out, but none of them in sight either. I think I am going to invest in a bird feeder.

However, Golden Apples should be eaten and not hung on strings. A friendly neighbor dropped a very big bag of these luscious treats for my aunt this morning. And yes, I love every apple. I love the ripe ones peeled and salted. The green ones, I love them cut into pieces and pickled. But when I was a kid we would crack them by hitting them on the pavement. Yup, the Golden Apple was a real treat at the beach.

Dogs have always been a part of my childhood. My grandmother and aunt were dog and cat lovers. But later on dogs were only kept. There have been many different dogs since I was 6 years or so. Nevertheless, all the dogs fortunate to be in the care of my grandmother have always had nothing but love.

The latest dogs, Kirby and Teddy, have their own blend of food. And I do not mean dog food like Kibbles ‘n Bits. They get cooked food daily. Food can consist of rice or macaroni, topped with tuna, sardines, chicken, or other available meats. They are treated like kings.

The birds come like clockwork every day when the dogs are feeding. The blackbirds are the main culprits, with the doves and sparrows right behind. So sometimes I go to the yard checking the birds act like scavengers, while trying to take a few shots of them.

Today Kirby has eaten and now he is in the doghouse chilling. He is the cool one, unlike wild Teddy. He has got my attention by the way he is relaxing; looks like he is on vacation or something. I am rattling of a barrage of shots. Kirby is posing and believe you me I am not asking him too. Portraits of people are hard enough, far less a dog. Kirby is in fine form today, I think maybe he is trying to tell me the food was good.

Crop Over is a part of me and I love to photograph the annual carnival in Barbados. My preference is to capture the revelers at the starting point as they play mas before the judges in the National Stadium. It encompasses a lot of fast shooting because no one is posing for you. I could take up to two thousand images and hope that some are ok.

This image was entered in the Photo Challenge (Shoot a Celebration) for JPG Magazine February – March issue of 2008. Luck would have it that it was viewed and favored a lot. In the end it was picked for publishing by the editors. That was awesome because of the huge amount of entries. As I said before, it takes a bit of luck as well.

Denis Grady, a well know Gospel singer in Canada and a member of Franciscan and Friends organization was working on a benefit concert for St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Barbados. The charity concert was to raise money for the much needed repairs to the very Old Catholic church.

Since, the concert was actually going to be on the grounds of Cathedral; Denis thought it would have been good to have an actual image of the church on the advertising poster. And that is where I came in to the project.

Denis Grady and other artist take time from touring and other musical endeavors every year to do some charity work to benefit some needy cause. Franciscan and Friends Music Mission are on a mission this year again, South Africa Mission 2009. I want to wish them all the best for kind work they do.

Photography is a fickle business. And for professional and amateur camera clickers who have amass thousands of images without sale would know what I mean. A photographer first has to love this medium to be good or successful at it. To be honest a bit of luck can go along way as well.

Well, a spot of luck did come my way. I was approached by Kerri Davis from Hammock Inc. Hammock Inc is a media base company that’s in the business of helping clients tell their stories. In this case their client was DAR, Daughters of the American Revolution. DAR publishes American Spirit magazine every two months. The magazine is well known and has been around since 1892. Hammock Inc revamp American Spirit magazine in 2003 and the circulation has risen to 41,000 plus.

So when Kerri contacted me about using this image for an upcoming piece on the house that George Washington stayed at when he was in Barbados, I was elated to say the least. For those who follow my blog and Flickr space would have noticed I did a piece on the George Washington House in Barbados sometime in the past. The image, Majestic Window, was use (full page) accompanied by an article on Historic Homes – Washington’s Stay in Barbados by Sharon McDonnell.

I have seen the American Spirit issue January / February 2009 and it is lovely. My image is on page 44 and the article was well written. But it is surely wonderful that some 41,000 folks will view the image this January / February 2009.

It does not matter when I am in Barbados I find myself capturing the Empire Theater. There is something that draws me to it. It is a grand structure even in its derelict state. And yes, I have done a blog piece on it before. Since then we have had statements from the government of Barbados about its restoration. But unfortunately the Empire Theater is still waiting in vain for our love.

At the moment it is a blot on the landscape. Bridgetown is an old wonderful city and deserves better. The city’s magnificent old structures need love and restoration. Ranting on the outcome at the moment seems useless. We just have to wait and see, it at all, when the Empire Theater will wake from its dilapidated slumber.

This beautiful two storey limestone and timber house is elaborate with its lovely windows and hoods. The grand entry to the home is magnificent. The detail in carpentry is awesome and you probably would not see a house being built with this sort of architecture today.

Sadly on April 22nd 2008 this architectural wonder located on Crumpton Street was destroyed by fire, leaving it a shell of itself. Maybe it will be gutted and rebuilt with as it was before. At some later date I will post some images of the burnt out grand house.

I exited the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary into the beastly heat of the day. Tired from shooting views from the sanctuary, I needed to relax. I did not have to look far. Across the street was salvation, the cool waters of the South Coast beckoned. Looking both ways of the street I walked across to the white sands of Worthing Beach.

Admittedly, this beach was never on my radar as a child. Beaches like the Hilton, Hastings Rocks, Accra, Dover, and Miami were the names I knew. But I never rode my bicycle no further than Accra Beach in the early and late seventies. Accra Beach was my beach of choice as a youth.

But Worthing Beach humbled me. The views in either direction of the sea coast were awe inspiring. It seems like some place an artist would come and spend the day painting. The colors were beautiful. The blues of the water glistened and rippled. The sea was calling, but I had to settle for my feet being bathed in the cool waters of the evening. I had to consider my camera gear.

Departing from the lovely stretch of beach, I knew that my return was a foregone conclusion. So for all those who venture to Barbados for whatever reason, kindly navigate to the South Coast of the island, and rest your weary soul on the sandy shores of Worthing Beach.

These lovely birds are absolutely beautiful creatures. I really do not believe many folks in Barbados even pay any attention to these fascinating birds even though you see them flying all over the place. And the fact that they are so plentiful may have something to do with the reality that they have no natural predators.

Some may only notice this brown dove only when they have nested in the gutter of their homes. Folks seem to find them a nuisance then. But all it requires is for the nest to be moved. Or they may become problematic when you hang your wash on the line and they leave a deposit on the clothing.

But for me I find them fascinating. I have had this interest in them since I was a kid. As kids, we would catch them for food. We had many ways of capturing them, the easiest of them being the DOWNFALL. The DOWNFALL was simply an open box or crate propped up by a stick of a foot or so with a string (cord) attached to it. When the bird walked under box the string would then be pulled and the dove would be captured. We also had a more elaborate contraption called a FLYSTICK. The FYLSTICK consisted of sticks placed closely together in a circle and which were hammered into the earth. Three stick would be removed for the dove to pass through. Then a bendable stick (like that from a Tamarind Tree) would be pushed in the earth behind the circle of sticks. On the other end of this stick a noose would be tied and placed where the three sticks were removed. The noose was opened across the path and the stick was held in place by a nail shaped into a U and hammered into the ground. When a dove stepped on the noose the stick would fly capturing the bird by the leg. But none had the thrill of the slingshot, better known to the kids of Barbados as a gutterperk. You just had to be darn accurate to use a gutterperk. I got so good at it I used marbles instead of rocks, and would often call what part of the dove I would hit. Using the gutterperk gave you a sense of being a hunter. You had to be stealthy to down a dove. It was not easy.

Now I capture doves with my camera. I love to watch them. Who can deny the lovely cooing sounds they make. They are fast, agile, and move very swiftly. And if you listen closely you can hear sounds their wings make while cutting through the air. So, listen for the brown mourning dove and you would hear, oo-wah-hoo-oo-oo, oo-waoh, oo-waoh.

There is a war in the minds and hearts of many when it comes to the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary. And if you believe I am talking about the common citizens of Barbados, I am not. The Government seems to be at a mental block when it comes to understanding the significant of a major green space like the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary (and the surrounding areas). Apparently the powers that be in the Government cannot bring themselves to naming the Graeme Hall Swamp area a National Park.

It gets a bit stickier. Peter Allard an environmental philanthropist and owner of the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary sadly declared he will be closing the sanctuary on December 15, 2008. He and thousands of Barbadians have petition the government for many years to declare the swamp area a National Park. Mr. Allard even said publicly that he would gift the government of Barbados the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary if they were to name the surrounds swamp areas and the sanctuary a National Park.

I have had the ability in the late 1970s to fish, hunt doves, and crabbing in the Graeme Hall Swamp area. In those days you would not be able to avoid getting your feet muddy while fishing on the banks of the swamp. It is a beautiful nature area.

Now you can admire what Peter Allard has done with the swamp area. One can now visit without getting your feet muddy. The ample paths of boardwalks give visitors lovely views of the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary and its wonderful wildlife. The sanctuary boasts three aviaries: the St. Vincent Amazon Exhibit; the Gully Habitat Aviary; and the Marshland Aviary. It is an oasis for the youth of Barbados, an educational imperative. I really cannot conceive this great green piece of Barbados closing. What a damn shame that would be if the government of Barbados allows the closure of the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary to go forward.
